Taking Time / Flatland Projects

Production for this exhibition was supported by Common Clay x WCCD Residency, the Grand Plan Fund and the Coward Foundation.

Touching on ideas of labor, the ubiquitous, the multiple, and the flux of migrating ideas, the installation is shrine to the unknown artisan. In the mountains of the Cordilleras in the Philippines, known for its rice terraces, and diverse ethnolinguistic groups, fine ceramics came by way of Chinese trade. Daily life revolves around the rituals of planting and harvesting rice. The bulul, more commonly known as a ‘rice god’, is a unique and complex symbol of these rituals.

Rice bowls were thrown in a repetitive process, as a way of reference for the unknown crafts people in East and Southeast Asia. A glaze experiment using Cordillera rice husk ash - an ingredient used in East and Southeast Asian ceramic traditions, was used and coloured in ode to celadon.
